Welcome to BabySunHat.net for all the information you need about Baby Sun Hats!
A Baby Sun Hat is a necessity for all babies and toddlers. It should be a vital part of any child's wardrobe.
Generally there are 3 styles of Baby Sun Hat which are recognised as being the most effective sun protection:
- Legionnaire Hats : These are a type of baseball hats which have a flap at the back to protect the baby's neck and ears. They also have a full peak which will shade the baby's face.
- Broad Brimmed Hats: These hats have a wide brim all the way around. Helping to protect the neck, ears and face.
- Bucket, (or beanie, as they are sometimes known as) hats. These tend to fit the face closer than the broad brimmed hats but still offer complete protection.
A baby sun hat can come with a chin strap and this is ideal for helping to keep the hat in place.
Whilst baseball hats can be very fashionable they do not cover the baby's neck or ears, places which are particularly vulnerable to sun burn.
Letting babies and toddlers be outside in the sunshine is good for them, but only provided you make sure that their delicate skin is protected. Babies under 6 months of age should never be exposed to direct sunlight.
Babies skin is far more delicate than an adult's and the sun's harmful rays can wreak massive long term damage to it if the skin is left unprotected. Their skin is much thinner than an adult's and as a result it can burn much quicker than you would expect. There has been a lot of research which has shown that sun damage at an early age, ie before the age of 18, can potentially lead to skin cancer (Melanoma) in later life. And statistics are showing that the number of cases being diagnosed is on the increase.
Many people make the mistake of assuming that because they do not live in a country which is traditionally considered to be a hot country that sun hats are not necessary - they could not be more wrong!
Protecting your baby from the sun should become second nature to you.
Despite your good intentions getting a baby to keep a sun hat on can sometimes be a challenge - but you should not give up! With a newborn baby you can introduce a baby sun hat right from the start and the baby will get used to it being part of its routine.
Many toddlers books these days portray their characters wearing hats so this can help to reinforce the idea that wearing a sun hat is a good idea. As the child gets slightly older let choose which hat they like - they could choose based on their favourite colour or they might like a character based one.
Young children also like to copy their parents so encourage them to wear their sun hats by wearing one yourself.
Always ensure that the sun hat is a good fit. Some parents like to get their money's worth out of their children's clothes but in this instance try not to buy a baby sun hat which is far too big for your baby's head. A large hat will just annoy them and you will have difficulty getting them to keep it on.
As well as ensuring your baby wears its sun hat you should also ensure that you use a good quality sun protection cream with a high SPF value - one of at least 50. Between the hours of 11am and 3pm the sun is at its strongest so this is when you should particular attention to protection. However please note that the experts do not recommend sunscreen on babies under the age of 6 months.
If you decide to take your baby into a swimming pool try to keep their sun hat on to keep them protected.
